Short Crossings: Auger Boring Machines Step in When Open-cut Won’t Do

When pipeline routes cross roads, creeks or rivers, open-cut techniques typically cannot be used. In these encounters, contractors often turn to dry techniques using a tracked auger boring machine (ABM) or a cradle boring machine (CBM), or with wet techniques using a slurry mix and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment. While HDD is the preferred choice for accuracy beyond 400 ft, boring machines are well-suited for shorter crossings.
