Short Crossings: Auger Boring Machines Step in When Open-cut Won’t Do
When pipeline routes cross roads, creeks or rivers, open-cut techniques typically cannot be used. In these encounters, contractors often turn to dry techniques using a tracked auger boring machine (ABM) or a cradle boring machine (CBM), or with wet techniques using a slurry mix and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) equipment. While HDD is the preferred choice for accuracy beyond 400 ft, boring machines are well-suited for shorter crossings.

Where HDD is not applicable due to soil and risk conditions, Direct Pipe opens up a new application potential combining the advantages of microtunneling and Pipe Thruster Technology. It uses an AVN slurry micromachine for excavation and a Pipe Thruster installed in the launch shaft to push the TBM with the prefabricated pipeline into the ground in one single step.
In North America Direct Pipe has been used in more than 30 pipeline crossings since 2010 and is nowadays a recognized technology for challenging pipeline projects.
