The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) will celebrate Women in Construction (WIC) Week March 6-12, 2016. NAWIC’s mission is to enhance the success of women in the construction industry.
“NAWIC’s core purpose is ‘enhancing the success of women in the construction industry’ and what better way to continue this purpose, but to dedicate our WIC Week, not only to our members, but to all women working in and for the construction industry and to recognize the contributions women make to the success of projects in all facets of the industry,” said Riki F. Lovejoy, CBT, CIT, NAWIC president.
The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry. It is also a time for local chapters to give back to their communities. WIC Week provides an occasion for NAWIC’s thousands of members across the country to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the industry.
“Keeping true to our core purpose, NAWIC provides many resources for leadership skills training, networking and mentoring opportunities on local, regional and national levels, and fellowship with other women who understand the challenges of working in a non-traditional career,” said Lovejoy. “Being a member of NAWIC and participating in its programs is one of the best values in the industry for developing skills needed to excel, whether in the field or in the office. And the construction industry is beginning to better understand how having women in leadership positions is having a positive impact in all areas.”
NAWIC chapters across the nation will celebrate WIC Week with a wide variety of activities. Community service projects, jobsite tours, membership drives, children’s activities, hands-on workshops, fundraisers and school programs are some of the ways local chapters will observe WIC Week. Local chapters are also appealing to their local, state and national representatives to issue official WIC Week proclamations.
