Editor’s Message — Leading the Charge

Good leaders can provide the difference in overcoming challenges. We’ve seen this played out in a number of ways throughout the years in the oil and gas pipeline industry. When faced with project obstacles, leaders find a way around them. When faced with calamity, leaders find a way to rise above them. Leaders are the men and women who rally the team toward success.

In the oil and gas pipeline industry, leadership can be measured in many ways: From how a project is conceived to how it’s executed, from innovative management styles to implementing cutting edge best practices, from optimizing resources amid constrained market conditions to improving safety and integrity — and many other examples.

Since the market downturn in 2008, it’s clear many people and organizations have thrived under strong leadership to shepherd the industry through record boom years in North America, and it’s with that in mind that I announce the Pipeline Leadership Award.

This new award was created to recognize a distinguished individual, project or company for excellence in leadership and the implementation of innovative techniques and methods that have been proven on actual projects or industry initiatives.

The Pipeline Leadership Award honors advances in the construction, operation and maintenance of oil and gas pipelines, including innovations in the construction process, design, procurement, contract administration, process management, labor relations, training and safety that improve the global pipeline industry. The award also recognizes projects for innovative concepts and methods.

The Pipeline Leadership Award will be presented at the inaugural Pipeline Leadership Conference, Nov. 4-5, presented by Benjamin Media Inc., North American Oil & Gas Pipelines magazine and Continuum Advisory Group. The award winner will also be featured on the cover of the November issue of North American Oil & Gas Pipelines.

I’m excited to bestow this honor on our industry’s finest examples of leadership. You can help us by submitting your nomination before the Aug. 31 deadline.

To enter your nomination, go to plconference.com or napipelines.com and click on the link to the Pipeline Leadership Award in the navigation bar. That will take you to the award information page and criteria where you’ll find a link to the nomination submission form. If you have any questions about the award, please contact me at bkramer@benjaminmedia.com or (330) 467-7588.

I look forward to seeing your nominations. May the odds be ever in your favor, as your Hunger Games escort Effie Trinket would say.
