Editor’s Message: Celebrating a Pipeline Leader Who Speaks from the Heart

It’s an honor to bring you the 2022 Pipeline Leadership Award winner. This year’s recipient has built a reputation based on hard work and respect. Bob Osborn has advanced through the industry as a leader, starting as a laborer and rising to his current role as president of Michels Energy Group.

Osborn joined Michels Corporation in 2001. He has a passion for the people in the pipeline industry, especially in terms of ensuring their safety and facilitating their success. He prides himself on speaking from the heart. One of the attributes that sets him apart from other leaders in the industry, according to his colleagues, is his accessibility.

“He is always accessible and available when needed yet trusts his team to perform work and to act in accordance with Michels standards,” says Pat Michels, president and CEO of Michels. “In addition, Bob is also a visible leader, frequently visiting job sites and meeting with crews.”

Michels vice president of HSE Sean Nicholson says that level accessibility is what helps Osborn build trust with those around him.

“He’s always available, always a leader, but he has the ability to put a personal touch on that aspect,” Nicholson says. “He’s able to lean into that personal side, and hold himself up personally. That builds trust and lets the barrier come down.”

On a personal note, I’ve known Osborn for about a dozen years. He has always been willing to help with an article or provide insights about the industry in general. He’s been a great supporter over the years, and it’s a pleasure to highlight his career in this issue. Please join us in honoring Osborn at this year’s Pipeline Leadership Conference, Nov. 15-16, in Houston.

This issue always features insights into the development of responsibly sourced gas (RSG) certification and what it means for energy suppliers, as well as cybersecurity best practices and advances in leak detection methods.
